Leave a Comment Ok, I admit it. For many, many years I hated JavaScript. I hated writing JavaScript code, and even more I hated the pain that goes along with dealing with different browsers using reams of script code. I still hate the same problems today, but thanks to a recently gained better understanding of JavaScript and a small JavaScript client library called jQuery I’m no longer dreading the days when I have to write client centric Ajax script code. I started out as a JavaScript neophyte and stayed that way for a long time.

It took me some time after that to slowly get up to speed on modern JavaScript principles I had never even thought about up until then: Effective use of Closures, the Prototype model, class definitions, using functions as code, all of which require some getting used to when you are primarily dealing with static languages like C as I do for most of my work.

But even knowing JavaScript reasonably well is not enough — these days it’d be silly to work with raw JavaScript for DOM programming and not use some sort of library to help bridge the browser specific quirks and provide utility functionality to make it easier to work in a browser agnostic environment. I’ve checked out a number of different libraries over the last couple of years, but the one that really grabbed me is jQuery. To me this library strikes the right balance between size, feature set and ease of use.

Even originally after using it for just a few days I already felt like “this is what JavaScript and DOM programming should be! It’s one of those tools that has drastically changed of how I think about client side development and frankly it has helped me improve my skill set significantly.

Standards were typically driven by browser makers and large companies with a significant stake in the outcome. Sometimes the standard made sense for those groups, but turned out to be less effective when deployed in the harsh reality of the Internet. Over the years, numerous jQuery representatives have done a lot to advocate for developers and change the standards process for the better.

I posted this answer and then went out, and literally as I was leaving I thought “You know, you could trigger the change handler s ” and so I’ve updated the answer with that. Crowder Jun 24 ’11 at If you select a date and then re-select it, this event gets fired. Some developers will want to know when a date has changed from some initial state to know whether the data is “dirty” and needs to be saved.

For this reason, I’m downvoting you on this. You could have, of course; the goal of the site is to have good answers; respectful editing to achieve that is encouraged. It’s a design flaw in the datepicker, not in the answer. What it should do is fire a change event of some kind on the input, if and only if changing the date, but it doesn’t. Crowder Jan 24 ’14 at Triggering the change event within the onSelect function is as close as you’re going to get.

Bind an onClick Event to an Item in a DataTables Row CodeUnit 14 MAY As it has quickly become apparent on this site, my two current favourites in the land of web development is the fantastic jQuery javascript library and the brilliant jQuery-based DataTables plugin that gives you instant dynamic table features applied to any bog standard HTML table. So in each data row I added a column that contained both a greyed out happy and sad smiley face, on which the user will be able to click in order to color the appropriate face and thus indicate a state for that particular row of data.
