While a lot of lab work is computer-based, including research and data entry, some lab work is very hands-on. Although I was familiar with washing, sorting, and storing artifacts, photographing them was entirely new territory for me. At first I was not too concerned about attempting this photography. So I could simply point the camera and shoot, right? Over the last month or so, and with the help of Dr. While one can often get satisfactory results from point-and-shoot photography for scrapbooks and family albums, photographing artifacts is a more involved process. The purpose of taking these photos are to record in precise detail the appearance of an artifact, and to share them with other archaeologists, researchers, or the public, who cannot necessarily access the physical objects.
Well it seems these artists have thought about it too! The excavation was a financial success, With artifacts of gold. The arrowheads went straight to the Smithsonian, The rest was melted down and sold. This song is clearly about an archaeological excavation. Seriously, no self-respecting archaeologist sells artifacts. Also an archaeological excavation is more like buying a car than an investment.
Dating from B.C., this important find is the only picture we have so far of an Israelite king. This is the first mention of tribute paid to Assyria by Israel. King Jehu’s reign is mentioned in 2 Kings , even though the tribute is not.
History Crash Course Assyrian Conquest The Assyrians conquer northern Israel and vanquish the nation with exile. The Assyrians at this time occupy the territory immediately north — what is today’s Syria, Iraq, and Turkey — and they are continuing to build their empire. If you go the British Museum in London, you can see some fascinating Assyrian artifacts from this period. You can also see a relief from the walls of the magnificent palace at Nineveh, Assyria’s capital city.
That palace belonged to King Sennacherib, and the relief shows the siege of the Israelite city of Lachish; it was conquered by Sennacherib, who then boasted about it on his palace walls. The British stripped the relief from the Nineveh palace and brought to the British Museum. This is because this series relies on the traditional Jewish dating system for ancient history — that is for the dates “before the common era,” — BCE. The Jewish dating system and the Christian dating system vary by as much as years for the Assyrian, Babylonian and Persian periods, but by the time we get to the Roman period i.
While it is beyond the scope of this book to present a detailed explanation of the various chronologies of the ancient world, we will explain briefly the dominant dating systems used by modern historians.

A remarkable, perfectly preserved, wooden bowl unearthed from a two-thousand-year-old well has been revealed during conservation work being undertaken on the artefact this week, and an extraordinary story of ancient repair of the bowl suggests it was a valued object during the Iron Age. The Wooden Vessel Revealed: Old, Bowl-ed and Beautiful!
In July of this year, a team of archaeologists from the University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute, based in Orkney, excavated an enigmatic underground chamber beneath the floor of an Iron Age broch at the site of The Cairns, South Ronaldsay, Orkney, as part of research at the site. Now, on-going conservation work on a water-logged deposit, recovered from inside the underground chamber beneath the broch, has afforded an exceptionally rare glimpse of a stunningly well-preserved, two-thousand-year-old, wooden bowl.

November 23, istock Cryptozoology is the study of creatures whose existence has yet to be—or else cannot entirely be—proved or disproved by science. These creatures, known collectively as cryptids, include examples like the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, and the Himalayan Yeti, yet these famous cases are by no means the only ones on record. In fact, practically every country and corner of the globe has its own legendary monster or mystery creature that supposedly dwells there, from giant bats in Java to enormous water hounds in Ireland.
Believed to have a wingspan in excess of 10 feet making them roughly the same size as a condor , ahools are said to be covered in a thick brown or black fur like fruit bats, but unlike bats have long, powerful legs and claws and are supposedly capable of pouncing on and snatching up live prey—including humans, if the stories are to be believed—from open ground. Sightings of ahools are often dismissed simply as mistaken glimpses of owls, eagles, and other large birds of prey that inhabit the same rainforests, but some sources claim the creatures do indeed exist, and may even be an isolated and as-yet undiscovered species descended from pterosaurs.
However that may have been, they were so scared that the next morning all three refused to get up and eat; they were lying in their beds pale and trembling. Similar to but larger than a hippopotamus, and armed with a single long bony tusk or horn in the center of its forehead, the emela-ntouka is apparently herbivorous but like the hippo has a reputation for being dangerously confrontational when disturbed, and has even been known to turn on and kill creatures even larger than itself; its name means “elephant killer.
In local mythology, grootslangs were primordial creatures comprised of the head and front of an elephant and the back and tail of an enormous serpent. When the Earth was created, the grootslangs were all apparently destroyed, but according to legend, some survived and retreated to the deepest caves of the Northern Cape province. Tales of enormous tusked snakes—probably inspired by real-life sightings of enormous pythons that live in the same area—have rumbled on in South African folklore ever since; the mysterious disappearance of a British diamond magnate named Peter Grayson in the Richtersveld caves in is sometimes blamed on a grootslang.
Ever since then, hundreds of reported sightings of a grotesque two-legged, hooved monster with a sheep-like head and large scaly wings have been reported in the Pine Barrens, including one famous incident in the winter of when a long trail of hooved footprints, crossing under fences and over walls and rooftops, mysteriously appeared in the snow one night. According to local folklore, the Mapinguari stands around 8 feet tall, has a tough and apparently bulletproof covering of scales on its back, thick red fur on its head and belly, long, curved claws, and, if all of the stories are to be believed, a second mouth in the center of its stomach.
When approached by humans, the Mapinguari is said to rear up on its hind legs like a bear and can supposedly produce a foul-smelling scent to ward off potential hunters.

Does Archaeology Support The Bible? We can see the evidence of this all around us because, while the critics have attacked the Bible and denied the historicity of its civilizations and people, the shovel of the archaeologist has consistently overturned their claims. Amazingly enough, many archaeologists entered that field for the purpose of disproving the Bible, and yet an impressive number of them were finally forced to conclude that the Bible was, indeed, a most astonishing book.
Some have even become Christians and used their work to support the Biblical data they once sought to invalidate. It is important to understand that this evidence has confirmed what many experienced apologists have long held: If we can finally force them to look at the evidence without bias, many of the skeptics we deal with will finally have to do as these archaeologists have done–bow to the miraculous power and historical consistency of the Word of God.
During the 19 century, a movement known as “Higher Criticism” or the German Higher Critical School, made up of theologians from various universities in Germany, began attacking the Scriptures mercilessly. They were trying to show that the Bible was not an historically accurate book–that Adam and Eve never existed; that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were part of mythological Hebrew folklore; that Daniel was also a myth; that the Exodus never happened, or at least that it didn’t resemble the biblical record; that the gospels were written by anonymous authors in the 2nd or 3rd century; and more.

For EACH site you research, point it out on a map and explain how it was discovered. Describe some of the information about the past that has been found at each site. Explain how the information gained from the study of these sites answers questions that archaeologists are asking and how the information may be important to modern people.
